June 21 commentary

When I lived on the big island of Hawaii, it was common knowledge that the roads would only be repaired in an election year. Im pleased to announce that local politics don’t seem all that different. Gv union of fri june 16 reports that cong john Doolittle, after years of coasting to reelection after reelection, but this year in a real battle due to various charges of impropriety if not outright illegality, big john has announced that Five-hundred thousand dollars for the proposed Dorsey Drive Interchange has been secured through a bill approved Wednesday night by the U.S. House of Representatives. When Doolittle visited Grass Valley's City Hall several months ago, many public officials spoke to him regarding the need for additional funding to build the proposed Dorsey Drive Interchange. Dan Landon, director of the Nevada County Transportation Commission, said he assumed the congressman's funding allocation was in response to the "consolidated voice of the community. Sorry dan, this community has been crying out for help in alleviating traffic problems at the Dorsey drive interchange for years. Its an election year and suddenly Doolittle ears are hearing what he hasn’t heard before. Doolittles sudden interest in local problems and his response is due to his wanting our votes, nothing more. And the union slavishly publishes every one of his press releases and always with his picture. If this isn’t election campaigning posing as news I don’t know what is. How bout equal press space for his challenger Charlie brown, with browns proposals for alleviating our traffic problems? , and by the way, don’t forget to publish his picture too.

Steve baker on the morning show reported that mon sat bee ft page reported on a potential bill banning hand held phones in moving automobiles. But there are is resistors claiming that more study is needed. One has to wonder exactly what will be studied. Can any sane human being, even if they are a bureaucrat or elected representative really contend that driving with one hand rather than 2 is safer? Or that being distracted by a personal conversation increases the drivers concentration on driving? We have to wear seat belts. Motorcycle drivers must wear helmets. But the legislature is too gutless to mandate hands free cell phones in cars? What are these guys smoking?
