 Feb 15 commentary

Well another valentines day has come and went. The event offers a fascinating glimpse into our capitalist society. Most of our holidays have some originating basis in nature. Solitice or equinox, planting or harvest. Various religions take over pagan festivals and create their purportedly religious holidays to supplant nature worship. But valentines day stands out as fairly unique. It was created by capitalists to sell merchandise. Our celebration of the birth of jesus has evolved into the greatest spending frenzy on earth, but it at least had some original basis in nature. Valentines day is unique. It stands out as being a totally capitalist creation, brilliantly crafted out of thin air to sell greeting cards, chocolates, flowers and meals in more expensive restaurants than you normally eat at.. I do hope you supported our fragile economy by spending lavishly on all 4. In this curmongous spirit, i hearby rename valentines day "prove you love me, or else day". Its almost as clever a marketing ploy as the jewelry industry conning gullible men into purchasing gaudy jewelry for their hopefully adoring spouses every few years or so. Let see, its our whatever anniversary. So I must buy you a ring adorned with whatever the jewelry industry says is appropriate for this anniversary. And amazingly, the zombies who populate our streets and malls, and vote in our elections continue to fall for this nonsense.

Next item; The Miami Herald has become perhaps the first major American newspaper to bring up the troubling questions about 9/11 that the mainstream media has avoided. Published on Wednesday, February 1, 2006

9/11 Attacks: Avoiding the Hard Questions by Robert Steinback his article then lists a number of questions re 911 that regular listeners are already familiar with. The newsworthy point is that at long last, one major American newspaper is publishing a columnist who challenges and enumerates some of the the flaws in the govt story,

His article concludes with; Our current probe-ophobia is due in part to the political landscape: When one party holds all the cards, any call to investigate an alleged abuse of power or cover-up -- no matter how valid -- will look like a partisan vendetta. Those in power never want to investigate themselves. Maybe that's politics; he who holds the hammer drives the nails. But the outrage of 9/11 transcends party affiliation. We need all the outstanding questions answered -- wherever the chips may fall.

Next item: file this under: news from the planet of the insane. It’s a News Update from Citizens for Legitimate Government. Its titled: Bush facilitates his next 9/11-style terror attack: Arab firm to oversee 6 U.S. ports 11 Feb 2006

A company in the United Arab Emirates [Dubai Ports World] is poised to take over significant operations at six American ports as part of a corporate sale, leaving a country with ties to the Sept. 11 hijackers with influence over a maritime industry considered vulnerable to terrorism. The $6.8 billion sale is expected to be approved Monday. The company, DP World said it won approval from a secretive U.S. government panel that considers security risks of foreign companies buying or investing in American industry. For more info go to www. legitgov.org

Does this sound too crazy to be true? Please recall that the govt was about to sell the port of long beach facilities to the Chinese govt a few short years ago, until massive protest stopped the deal, and has allowed the Chinese to take over the daily operation of the panama canal. In light of those facts, could this be factual as well? Don’t you feel safer now that an arab company is about to take over operations at 6 american ports? Way to go homeland security. You da guys.

Next item: recently, Alberto Gonzales spoke before law students at Georgetown university, justifying illegal, unauthorized surveillance of US citizens, but during the course of his speech the students in class did something pretty ballsy and brave. They got up from their seats and turned their backs to him. To make matters worse for Gonzales, additional students came into the room, wearing black cowls and carrying a simple banner, written on a sheet. It was a quote from ben frankllin: "those who would sacrifice liiberty for security deserve neither."
Fortunately for Gonzalez, his was a brief speech... followed by a panel discussion that basically ripped his argument in half. He left before the panel began. Too bad. One of the people on the panel stated:
"When you're a law student, they tell you that if you can't argue the law, argue the facts. They also tell you if you can't argue the facts, argue the law. If you can't argue either, apparently, the solution is to go on a public relations offensive and make it a political issue... to say over and over again "it's lawful", and to think that the American people will somehow come to believe this if we say it often enough.
when it was over,
- David Cole, Georgetown University Law Professor stated: In light of this, I'm proud of the very civil civil disobedience that was shown here today." It was a good day for dissent.
